The UAE dirham (AED) is the official currency of the United Arab Emirates, issued by the Central Bank of the UAE. For Iran the dirham is more than a travel currency: Dubai is one of Iran's most important gateways for imports and foreign trade, and a large share of Iranian merchants' commercial transfers are settled in dirhams — alongside steady demand from travellers to Dubai.
The dirham's defining feature is stability: it has been pegged to the dollar since 1997 at 3.6725 dirhams per dollar. That is why its Toman price is always roughly a quarter (more precisely, one 3.67th) of the dollar's, moving in lockstep with it — if that ratio ever breaks, one of the two prices is wrong.
Circulating banknotes are 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1,000 dirhams, with polymer versions of several denominations entering circulation in recent years. Iranian exchange shops generally accept both paper and polymer notes.
