The Iraqi dinar (IQD) is the official currency of Iraq, issued by the Central Bank of Iraq. Iranian demand for the dinar is tied above all to pilgrimage — the shrine cities of Karbala and Najaf, and especially the annual Arbaeen walk that takes millions of Iranian pilgrims into Iraq — alongside cross-border trade between the two countries.
The key thing about this page: in Iran's exchange market the dinar is quoted per 100 dinars, not per single dinar. The price at the top of this page is the Toman price of 100 Iraqi dinars; divide by 100 for a single dinar. This is the standard convention among Iranian sarrafis and other Iranian price references.
The Central Bank of Iraq holds the dinar's rate against the dollar — since February 2023 the official rate has been 1,300 dinars per dollar, with banks selling cash dollars to the public at about 1,320 — so the dinar's Toman price in Iran effectively moves with the free-market dollar. Circulating banknotes are 250, 500, 1,000, 5,000, 10,000, 25,000 and 50,000 dinars.

It is Iran's market convention for low-value currencies: a single dinar is a small amount, so sarrafis quote bundles of 100 to keep prices easy to read and compare. The price on this page is likewise the Toman price of 100 dinars.
Rates differ between Tehran, the border towns and inside Iraq (Najaf and Karbala), and the gap widens around Arbaeen. Before travelling, compare this page's rate with what is offered at your destination or the border; buying part of your dinars before the trip usually reduces exposure to swings.
